WALNUT CREEK, CA — Thousands of Contra Costa County employees are on track for bigger paychecks, and the decision lands Tuesday morning in Martinez.
The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on a package of labor agreements that would deliver pay raises and one-time bonus payments to a wide swath of the county workforce. The details vary by bargaining unit — different unions, different percentages — but the direction is consistent: up.
County employees have been operating under contracts negotiated before the latest inflationary cycle pushed the cost of everything from gas to groceries higher. These agreements are, in part, a catch-up. The bonuses are a one-time acknowledgment that the gap between wages and cost of living opened faster than contract cycles could close it.
And look, nobody goes into county government to get rich. The people processing permits, maintaining parks, running public health programs, and keeping the social safety net operational are not exactly swimming in stock options. When the Board considers a pay package, the math is always the same: how much does it cost the county budget versus how much does it cost to lose experienced people to the private sector or neighboring counties that pay better?
The Board meets at the County Administration Building in Martinez. Tuesday’s session also includes votes on extending the county’s homelessness emergency declaration and a proposed policy limiting how county resources can assist federal immigration enforcement — so it is not exactly a quiet agenda.
The pay package is expected to pass. The question is not whether but by how much and with what amendments. The public can attend in person or stream the meeting online through the county’s website.
