The shape of Downtown

Downtown Walnut Creek is the rare East Bay core that behaves like a small city center: a walkable retail spine, real transit, and a tax base the rest of the town leans on.

Broadway Plaza anchors the shopping district between S. Main and N. Main; the restaurant core runs up N. Main and along Mt. Diablo Boulevard; Civic Park and the Lesher Center sit a few blocks north. Roughly 28% of the city's general fund comes from downtown retail — which is why so much of what the council decides about downtown is really about the whole city's books.

The character is high-turnover and event-driven. Farmers' market Sundays, First Wednesdays, the Lesher season, and a dense lunch crowd set the daily rhythm — and the police log shows it, with call volume cresting every afternoon between 2 and 5 p.m.

Where the pulse is

Calls for service by street, last 14 days — Downtown's so-called daytime "downtown" is really the N. Main corridor.

◆ Source: WCPD public daily log. Most calls are service calls (welfare checks, parking, false alarms), not crime; the log doesn't publish outcomes, so we report it as filed.
