Broadway Plaza, Explained

Broadway Plaza is a 960,000-square-foot open-air shopping center in downtown Walnut Creek. It runs along South Main Street and Mt. Diablo Boulevard.

Nordstrom and Macy’s anchor it. Around them sit 80-plus retailers and more than 30 places to eat. It’s the largest shopping destination in Contra Costa County.

Macerich owns and runs the center. No roof here and no indoor food court, only walkways, fountains, and a few blocks you cover on foot.

Broadway Plaza Hours

General plaza hours are Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those are walkway hours, not every store’s. Individual shops set their own.

Most restaurants stay open later, and the coffee spots open early. Check one store’s page before you drive over for it.

Parking and Rates at Broadway Plaza

Three free garages serve the plaza, and all of them give you the first three hours free.

• Broadway Garage — enter from South Broadway. The largest and most central.
• Nordstrom Garage — enter from Mt. Diablo Boulevard. Closest to the north end.
• Macy’s Garage — enter from South Main or Olympic Boulevard. Best for the south end.

After three hours, standard rates apply. On busy weekends and through the holidays, the garages fill by midday. Circling is not worth it.

Street parking around the plaza is metered and time-limited. The downtown meters are the backup plan, with a short walk.

Getting to Broadway Plaza

BART drops you a 10-minute walk from the plaza. Head west on Ygnacio Valley Road, then south on North Main. Check BART’s schedule for current times.

By car, take I-680 to the Ygnacio Valley Road exit, then south on North Main. From Highway 24, take the Mt. Diablo Boulevard exit and head east.

County Connection serves downtown, with Routes 4, 5, and 7 stopping near the plaza.

The Old Neiman Marcus Corner

The most prominent empty space at Broadway Plaza is the old Neiman Marcus building. It sits at the corner of South Main and Mt. Diablo.

Neiman Marcus closed in 2021. The 1000 S. Main building has sat empty since. That’s five years of nothing on a prime corner.

Restoration Hardware proposed a big redevelopment — four buildings, a glass conservatory restaurant, fountains, and nearly 70 new trees. The plan would have added about 30,000 square feet of retail and dining.

Then the company withdrew its application in 2026. Construction didn’t start. The corner is still vacant.
