WALNUT CREEK, CA — The Petco at Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove has about five days left, and after nearly a decade on that corner it’ll be gone.

The store at 2820 Ygnacio Valley Road closes Sunday, Sept. 21, according to the Bay Area Telegraph. It anchors the east end of The Orchards shopping center, right next to the Safeway.

If you’ve ever done the quick run up Ygnacio Valley Road for a bag of dog food or a flat of canned cat food, you know the loop: Petco on one end, Safeway on the other, the whole errand wrapped before the light at Oak Grove even thought about turning.

This wasn’t some pop-up. The North Walnut Creek location was one of 13 new Petco stores the chain opened nationwide back in 2016, and it’s held down that corner for almost exactly ten years.

No one has said publicly why it’s closing, or what moves into the space next. Patch reports the replacement tenant is still unknown, and the store itself isn’t saying.

If You Need Pet Supplies After Sept. 21

  • Still open in Walnut Creek: 1301 S. California Blvd.
  • Next closest: 1150 Concord Ave, Concord.
  • Grooming, training, or other services booked at the Ygnacio Valley store? Call them now to sort out where your appointment lands.

That last part is the one worth paying attention to. If you’ve got a grooming appointment or a training session on the books for next month, don’t assume it’ll magically move on its own — the store is telling customers to call and sort it out before the 21st.

Look, Walnut Creek is a town that keeps adding homes and keeps watching its retail shuffle. A homegrown brand like VICI can come home to North Main the same season a national chain quietly pulls out of a strip-mall corner. None of it is the end of the world — there’s still a Petco on South California Boulevard, ten minutes down the road. It’s just one more errand that got a little less convenient.

The Bottom Line

Petco’s Ygnacio Valley Road store closes Sunday, Sept. 21. Regulars have until then to run any lingering supply errands — and anyone with a grooming or training appointment should call before it’s too late. After that, it’s South California Boulevard or Concord.
