Joybound’s Thrift Crawl Turns Bargain Hunting Into a Contra Costa Treasure Hunt — With Cats

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Somewhere between the racks of donated cardigans and a shelf of gently used bread makers at Joybound’s Concord thrift store, a golden ticket is tucked away. Find it, and your Tuesday afternoon bargain run just got a lot more interesting.

The East Bay Thrift Store Crawl launched Saturday and runs through August 18, transforming more than 10 Contra Costa thrift stores into a countywide treasure hunt with prizes, free treats, and — because Joybound doesn’t do anything halfway — adoptable cats.

Joybound People & Pets, the Walnut Creek nonprofit formerly known as ARF, organized the event to boost traffic to local thrift stores while raising money for animal rescue. And look, the formula is surprisingly good: part scavenger hunt, part shopping spree, part meet-your-next-cat mixer. It’s the kind of multi-purpose outing that August desperately needs.

Here’s the deal. Hidden golden tickets are stashed throughout Joybound’s thrift store at 1950 Market Street in Concord. Spot one, and you claim a prize right there. But the main event is the crawl — collect a sticker from every participating shop on the official map, and you’re entered to win a $275 grand prize gift card. The map covers stores in Concord, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill, and deeper into the county.

Each stop on the crawl has its own personality. Some shops lean vintage clothing, others are furniture-heavy, a few specialize in the kind of eclectic housewares that make you say “who donated this and why?” That’s half the fun — the crawl gives you permission to browse without a mission, which is the only correct way to thrift.

And then there are the cats. Joybound’s Cat Lounge sits inside the Concord location, so between sifting through hardcover mysteries and testing whether a 1970s fondue set still works, you can meet adoptable cats in a quiet, no-pressure space. The staff doesn’t hover. You can just sit with a cat and see if there’s a connection. If you leave with both a cat and a $7 lamp shaped like a pineapple, that’s between you and your interior designer.

August is an odd month in Contra Costa. The heat pushes triple digits inland, summer camps wrap up, and everyone’s looking for something to do that involves air conditioning and low expectations. A thrift crawl fits that brief perfectly. It’s indoors, it’s free to participate, and the stakes couldn’t be lower — worst case, you walk out with nothing. Joybound has been steadily expanding its community programming since rebranding from ARF in 2024. The organization still handles animal rescue and adoption — that’s the core — but events like the summer movie series and now the thrift crawl show an organization thinking beyond the shelter walls. The thrift store itself is a fundraising workhorse. Every lampshade and DVD box set funds rescue operations, spay and neuter programs, and foster care for animals across the East Bay.
